More than 100 arrested in Indonesia fuel hike protest

Last updated:

Jakarta: Indonesian police arrested more than 100 protesters in Jakarta on Saturday after the protest turned violent.

Some protesters burnt tyres and others threw Molotov cocktails to protest the rise in the price of fuel by nearly 30 per cent.

Police said those arrested have been detained for questioning. The protesters did not have a permit to stage the really in front of the National University in South Jakarta.

Oil price increases have sparked protests across Indonesia, whose government said on Friday that despite the hike, the price was still "lower than in poor countries such as East Timor."
