Jets attack Tamil Tigers' runway building
The Sri Lankan military says air force jets have attacked a building near a rebel runway, a day after two planes from the rebels' tiny air wing managed to drop bombs near government troops and get away unscathed.
Colombo: The Sri Lankan military says air force jets have attacked a building near a rebel runway, a day after two planes from the rebels' tiny air wing managed to drop bombs near government troops and get away unscathed.
The rebels' continued ability to launch their light aircraft is an embarrassment to the military. Despite its jets and anti-aircraft guns, the military has not been able to shoot them down.
Exaggerations
Rebel spokesman Rasiah Ilanthirayan could not be reached for comment yesterday.
Both sides routinely exaggerate enemy casualties while underreporting their own.
In addition to the rebel air attack, the military is also on the defensive for its performance during a battle Wednesday in the Jaffna peninsula in which scores of soldiers were killed.
Meanwhile Sri Lankan authorities say police have defused a time bomb at a bus station that was set to go off during the crowded morning rush hour.
A military official said on condition of anonymity that a commuter noticed a suspicious package yesterday morning at a bus station north of Colombo and called police.
Authorities discovered a mortar shell converted into a makeshift time bomb and defused it.
The official said police discovered an 81 millimetre mortar shell converted into a time bomb set to detonate about 7:40 am local time inside the parcel. A bomb disposal unit soon arrived on the scene and defused the device.
Sri Lankan officials have asked the public to become more vigilant in the wake of recent bombings blamed on Tamil Tiger rebels.
