Cancun: At least five people were killed and another 20 injured on Sunday in an explosion at a hotel on Mexico's Gulf coast, a state prosecutor's office said.
"There are five dead, right now we do not have their identities, but we know that they were kitchen staff" at a hotel in Playa del Carmen in Quintana Roo state, said a prosecutor's office spokesman.
The area is about 90 kilometres (56 miles) from the major resort center of Cancun, along what is known as the Maya Riviera.
"Twenty injured have been counted," the spokesperson added, noting that preliminary reports were that a gas tank exploded at the Princess hotel.
Canadian media, meanwhile, reported that some of the dead may have been from Canada as a large group from that country were at the resort when the blast occurred.
Mexican authorities did not immediately identify victims by nationality.
