Dili, East Timor: East Timor declared a state of emergency on Tuesday after an assassination attack that left the president in “extremely serious'' condition.

Medics at an Australian hospital where East Timor leader Jose Ramos-Horta was admitted said that they are planning more surgery for up to three gunshot wounds.

Ramos-Horta was critically wounded at his home in Dili on Monday after rebel soldiers shot him.

Len Notaras, general manager of Royal Darwin Hospital, told Australian radio that they are planning surgery in the next 34 to 36 hours.

"He will be in an induced coma until at least Thursday, intensive care until Sunday or Monday of next week," he said.

In Dili, East Timor's interim president Vicente Guterres declared a state of emergency and appealed for calm. He also declared a curfew between 8pm and 6am.

About 200 fast-reaction troops from Australia and more police began arriving in Dili on Tuesday to back up international forces policing a state of emergency.
