Belgrade: The deadline passed for former Bosnian Serb warlord Radovan Karadzic to file a formal appeal against his extradition to the war crimes court in The Netherlands.
Svetozar Vujacic, Karadzic's lawyer, was quoted as saying by the Politika newspaper that Karadzic's team of lawyers posted an appeal by regular mail just before the overnight deadline expired to slow down the legal process.
Once it receives the appeal, a three-judge panel of Serbia's war crimes court will have three days to decide on its merits before the justice ministry must issue the final order for the transfer.
Karadzic faces 11 charges against him at The Hague tribunal, including genocide and conspiracy to commit genocide of 8,000 Muslims in Srebenica in 1995.
A prosecutor interviewed Karadzic for more than an hour on Friday about the details of the war crime suspect's arrest, said his lawyer, Sveta Vujacic.
Karadzic had been a fugitive for over a decade before he was arrested; posing as an expert in alternative medicine. Government officials say he was captured on Monday.
In Serbia, the Vecernje Novosti daily reported that Karadzic has been reading the Bible since in detention, drinking only water and eating whole-grain bread.
