Yangon: Barbed wire barricades blocking off the Shwedagon Pagoda, the rallying point for last week's protests against military rule, were removed on Monday, witnesses said.
However, soldiers were stationed at the four entrances to the glittering shrine where a week ago riot police charged at monks trying to march to Yangon's city centre.
Soldiers and police remain at many street corners and key locations in the city of five million, making it impossible for crowds of demonstrators to gather, witnesses said.
State television and media said on Friday that 10 civilians and at least five monks had been killed when troops cleared the streets.
Meanwhile, Ebrahim Gambari, the UN's special ambassador to Myanmar, is still in the country in hopes of having a possible meeting with the ruling generals.
Gambari met jailed democracy leader Aung San Suu Kyi on Sunday after he arrived in Myanmar to negotiate for peace.
