Aditya, 20, and Nitesh, 29, tried to overtake each others' cars on a busy road in Worli in south central Mumbai on Wednesday night.
After a heated exchange the pair lodged complaints against each other at the nearby Worli police station.
Sources close to the two leaders said Aditya and Nitesh travelling separately in their cars from Worli to Byculla.
Seeing Aditya going ahead of him, a competitive Nitesh — driving a BMW — overtook the Thackeray scion's car. A convoy of four more vehicles, occupied by Nitesh's friends, also overtook Aditya's vehicle.
Upset with the manner in which Nitesh tried to upstage him, Aditya stopped his vehicle and confronted his rival near the Four Seasons hotel.
The subsequent verbal clash between the two leaders resulted in a major traffic jam. Wednesday's was the second occasion in the last week the pair have been involved in such a competition.
Four nights earlier, Nitesh had overtaken Aditya's car on the Bandra-Worli sea link.
Police confirmed both had registered complaints.
