Wave of terror blasts rock Indian capital

New Delhi: Terror struck the Indian capital once again, leaving at least 30 dead and more than 100 injured in a series of blasts that rocked busy marketplaces in the metropolis on Saturday evening.

The authorities say the number of dead could increase since many of the injured were admitted to various hospitals in critical condition.

The police have detained two suspects from downtown Connaught Place, the site of two of the five blasts, and are questioning a 12-old-year balloon seller who may have witnessed two suspects placing bombs on Barakhamba Road.

The Indian Mujahideen, which earlier perpetrated similar serial blasts in Jaipur, Bangalore and Ahmedabad, claimed responsibility for Saturday's bombings in an e-mail sent to various media houses and has warned that their next target would be Mumbai.

The casualty figures would have been much higher as the authorities managed to detect and defuse at least four bombs placed at various localities, including the historic India Gate.
