Mumbai: Mukesh Ambani, billionaire and chairman of Reliance Industries, will now get ‘Z’ category security cover from the Indian government following a threatening letter from terrorist organisation Indian Mujahideen (IM).

Ambani will be protected round-the-clock by the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) following approval from the Ministry of Home Affairs. He will now have pilot and follow-on vehicles, with commandoes armed with modern weapons who will provide him security in Mumbai and also when he travels across the country.

A 24-member team of CRPF personnel will be deputed for the task and will provide security even in his Mumbai home, the Antilla, where he resides with his family.

The IM letter threatened an attack on Antilla. The home ministry’s decision to provide him top security came after an inquiry by the Mumbai Police into the IM’s letter.

The CRPF is widely used as a paramilitary police force for the maintenance of internal security in the country and to contain insurgency, especially in anti-Naxal operations. This is perhaps the first time that an individual is being given security on this scale. He reportedly received threats from the IM for his proximity to Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi.

Questions are being raised on why India’s richest man cannot come up with an elite security team of his own for his protection.

Preeti Sharma Menon of the Aam Aadmi Party told Gulf News: “Even if Ambani is going to pay for his security, how can the government agree to serve a private individual when the CRPF has taken a pledge to serve the nation?” She added that the forces would be diverted from being deployed for more pressing issues related to the country’s security.
