Guwahati: An official says a surging river fed by heavy monsoon rains has washed away five villages in India's remote northeast , forcing nearly 4,000 residents to take shelter in makeshift relief camps.
Assam state Revenue Minister Bhumidhar Barman says as large chunks of mud and water flowed into the villages in Nagaon district Saturday, the residents abandoned their homes and moved on high ground along the Brahmaputra River embankments.
Authorities put them in makeshift relief camps and provided them with rice, lentils and water purifying tablets, the minister said on Sunday. The area is nearly 130 kilometres east of Guwahati, the capital of Assam state.
