Minister calls for Yesudas to sing at famous temple
G. Sudhakaran, Kerala Minister of Devaswoms, is to request authorities to allow veteran singer K.J. Yesudas - a practising Christian - to sing in a famous temple that bars the entry of non-Hindus.
Thiruvananthapuram: G. Sudhakaran, Kerala Minister of Devaswoms, is to request authorities to allow veteran singer K.J. Yesudas - a practising Christian - to sing in a famous temple that bars the entry of non-Hindus.
Yesudas has sung a lot of devotional Hindu songs, including in temples, but has not yet been granted permission to sing at the Sree Krishna Temple in Guruvayur.
Sudhakaran said he was going to send a letter to the president of the Guruvayoor devaswom [temple trust] today.
"Music has no religion and he has sung so many Hindu devotional songs. I decided to do this on my own and Yesudas has not made any request for this," said Sudhakaran, a senior leader of the ruling Communist Party of India-Marxist.

"And if I am not mistaken, I remember reading in newspapers that even the Bharatiya Janata Party also wants this to happen," he added.
Asked whether he was courting controversy, he said: "I feel there would be an all round consensus to this demand of allowing Yesudas to sing at the Guruvayur temple."
