New Delhi: The Indian government is taking proactive steps to ensure the return of Indian painter M.F. Husain from exile.
The government is contemplating to approach the Supreme Court for speeding up the disposal of all cases arising out of Husain’s controversial paintings. Federal home ministry sources said the cases filled across the country against Husain should be brought to a logical conclusion, according to the Press Trust of India.
Husain has been living in exile in Dubai since 2006. The main cause for his exile is paintings done by him on Hindu god and goddess. Husain had also made an emotional appeal to the government of India saying he would like to return home.
In May last year, the Delhi High Court did away with some of the criminal proceedings against the nonogenarian painter, saying his paintings were an expression of creativity. Husain’s lawyer Akhil Sibal said that there were several cases pending against Husain in Delhi. “The government should bring amendments in law so that such persons like him should not get harassed,” he said.
