New Delhi: A court in India has made a groundbreaking ruling to decriminalise consensual gay sex in the capital of the deeply conservative society.

The Delhi High Court ruling, the first of its kind, applies only in New Delhi. The ruling says that treating consensual gay sex as a crime is a violation of fundamental rights protected by the constitution.

Anjali Gopalan, head of a foundation that filed a petition prompting the ruling, says that India is finally entering the 21st century.

Sex between people of the same gender has been illegal in India since British colonial times and can be punishable by up to 10 years in prison.

The court's verdict can be challenged in India's Supreme Court.

This is totally a wrong decision. It is shameful for the indian culture. Its right that we are entering in the 21st century but it dosent mean that we have to pay our cultural cost for it.I dont know how the court has taken this decision. I am agree with Lily that India is taking the wrong side. It will affect indias children

Let some medical experts talk on this issue. No point in listening to so called protectors of society.Who knows your son or daughter would be born with such preferences. Live and let others live. Indian army has nothing to do with this. Army, jails and hostels in every country has mix of these people, if anyone accepts or denies.

As an Indian , i strongly object this ruling off. Sex is between a man and a woman, why it should be between a the same sex. If there should have been, there is no need of the other sex at all. I think, India is taking the wrong side.
