Mumbai: India on Tuesday enforced a measure banning child labour in hotels, restaurants and small shops.
The ban came amid criticism that the measure is unenforceable. Social activists also say the government should try to eliminate poverty first since poor parents force their children to work.
India's laws banning child labour in hazardous industries has been widely ignored, with thousands still working in factories for firecrackers carpets.
The ban also prohibits the employment of children in spas,
motels, tourist resorts or other recreational centers.
The government earlier banned government officials from
employing children to work as domestic servants.
