Attari, Punjab: Family members of an Indian prisoner, released by Pakistan after 10 years of imprisonment, went through an agonising wait yesterday as the man could not return home to India.

Ram Prakash, who was held in Lahore's Kot Lakhpat jail on spying charges and was finally released on Monday, came to the Wagah-Attari border checkpost between the two countries on Tuesday.

However, Indian authorities turned him away, saying he did not possess valid travel documents, meaning a passport and visa.

The prisoner's travel documents had not reached the border checkpost Tuesday due to a communication gap about the date of his release with the Indian embassy in Islamabad.

The family members of Ram Prakash came from Jammu, 250 km from Attari, yesterday to receive him but were disappointed as he could not cross the border over for yet another day.
