Lucknow: Four youths were arrested because they sped away in their car despite being flagged down by the police, brushing past an Indian Police Service (IPS) probationer in Uttar Pradesh capital Lucknow.
One of them claimed to be a relative of a legislator of the state's ruling Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP), but he turned out to be a family friend of the lawmaker.
Circle Officer of Gomtinagar, S.C. Dubey, who is an IPS officer under training, escaped unhurt late Friday night when the car brushed past him in Lucknow's upmarket Gomtinagar area.
"None of them is a relative of Ghoora Ram, a BSP lawmaker from Ballia district in eastern Uttar Pradesh, as was claimed by one of the youths. Ram told us he is only a family friend," Dubey said.
Vishwajeet Singh, who claimed to be the legislator's relative, and three others, Himanshu Singh, Mayank Pandey and Vinay Kalwani, drove out from a multiplex in a black Maruti Swift car, bearing a BSP Flag, around 10pm Friday.
Tinted windows
"Since the car windows had dark tinted [glass], which is not permissible, we signalled them to stop. Instead, they increased the speed and we had a narrow escape," Dubey said. Police caught them after a brief chase.
"All of them were in an inebriated state and Singh started misbehaving with us. I also talked to the legislator on phone and he clarified everything," said Dubey.
