Bhubaneswar: The man who coached controversial child marathon runner Budhia Singh has been killed in the eastern Indian state of Orissa.
Police say that Biranchi Das was shot twice after being approached by three men at the judo club he runs, but ruled out the possibility that the killing was linked to the boy.
He was declared dead on arrival at Bhubaneswar hospital.
Das shot to fame in 2005 as the mentor of running prodigy Budhia Singh, who once ran 65km without stopping.
He was heavily criticised by doctors and child welfare campaigners for his treatment of the boy, whom he bought for 800 rupees after spotting his potential.
Police were forced to intervene after he planned to send Budhia on a 500km walk.
