Eleven sentenced to jail in Bihar fodder scam
A special Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) court yesterday sentenced 11 people, convicted in the multi-million fodder scam case, involving fraudulent withdrawal of Rs5.5 million (Dh500,000) from Godda treasury in the 1990s.
Ranchi: A special Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) court yesterday sentenced 11 people, convicted in the multi-million fodder scam case, involving fraudulent withdrawal of Rs5.5 million (Dh500,000) from Godda treasury in the 1990s.
Judge Manoranjan Kavi awarded rigorous imprisonment (RI) up to seven years to Regional Director of Animal Husbandry Department (AHD) Dumka, Omprakash Diwakar, and another AHD official, Ajit Kumar.
The court also imposed a fine of Rs75,000 (Dh6,818) on Diwakar and Rs275,000 (Dh25,000) on Kumar.
The then Treasury officer Rakesh Kumar Sinha, accounts officer Balkrishna Dubey, assistant treasury officer Bhanukar Dubey and budget-accounts officer Brajbhushan Prasad were sentenced to four years RI and were imposed a fine ranging between Rs125,000 (Dh11,363) and Rs250,000 (Dh22,727).
Supplier Rajesh Kumar Sinha, was sentenced to six years RI and imposed a fine of Rs150,000 (Dh13,636).
Other suppliers - Tripurari Mohan Prasad, Sushil Kumar, Naresh Prasad and Brajesh Kumar Sinha - were awarded four years jail term and imposed fine between Rs55,000 (Dh5,000) to Rs150,000 (Dh13,636).
The multi-crore fodder scam was unearthed in 1996 and the investigation was handed over to the CBI on the order of Patna High Court. The CBI had filed a total of 60 cases in the Rs9.5 billion (Dh863 million) fodder scam.
The convicts mostly comprised of treasury officials and suppliers.
A total of 53 cases remained in Ranchi after the division of Bihar, while seven cases were shifted to Patna. A couple of cases were closed on different grounds.
