New Delhi: The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) on Monday said murdered teenager Aarushi Talwar's parents were at their Noida home on the night the crime took place, contrary to media reports.

The investigating agency issued an official statement after Aarushi's mother Nupur Talwar visited the CBI headquarters, seeking permission to act against media organisations trying to malign her.

Character assassination

"An electronic news channel has been showing reports stating that I and my husband (Rajesh) were not present at our home and had instead booked rooms in a hotel. This amounts to character assassination," Nupur, who is a dentist like her husband, told reporters here.

The CBI statement denying the reports said: "A section of the media has reported, quoting CBI sources, that Dr Rajesh Talwar and Dr Nupur Talwar were not present in their house on the night of May 15 and that more than a dozen rooms were booked in a hotel in Delhi. It is clarified that the news item is speculative and not true."

Aarushi, 14, was found dead in her Jal Vayu Vihar home in Noida on May 16. The Noida police initially named the Talwars' domestic help Hemraj as the prime suspect but had to change course in the investigation after his body was found the next day on the terrace of the house.

Aarushi's father Rajesh Talwar was arrested on May 23. Police said he killed his daughter in a fit of rage over her alleged closeness to Hemraj.

A second arrest in the case was made on June 13 when the CBI held Talwar's compounder Krishna.

Later, Rajkumar, the servant of Talwar's friends Praful and Anita Durani, was also arrested and his blood-stained T-shirt and bicycle seized.

The case has only turned murkier with every passing day and the CBI has yet not been able to establish a motive behind the murders.
