Mumbai: Bollywood superstar Amitabh Bachchan on Saturday successfully underwent an abdominal surgery at a hospital here, days after he complained of "pain in the abdomen".

Sixty-nine-year-old Bachchan was admitted to the Seven Hills Hospital at Andheri in north Mumbai on Friday night. After the surgery, Amitabh's actor-son Abhishek Bachchan tweeted: "Thank you all for your wishes and prayers. The surgery went off well and dad is now in the room resting".

"He is very stable... I will not comment on his medical condition, it is his personal thing. All I can say is that he underwent an abdomen surgery," one of the doctors attending on him at the hospital said.

Earlier, shortly after noon, a doctor told the media that the surgery was going well. Bachchan had tests and it was found that he needed surgery.

Senior Bachchan had on Thursday himself volunteered information about the surgery, through a post on his blog. Hours before he underwent surgery, Sr Bachchan — who has had a history of stomach ailments since his intestinal injury on the set of 1982 film Coolie — wrote from his hospital bed: "I wish to thank all those that have most graciously sent in their concern and greetings for a speedy recovery. Your prayers shall go a long way in bringing me back to normal and for this I am always eternally grateful."
