I think it was a rude awakening when East and West Germany were divided. For more than a quarter of a century, the Berlin Wall stopped almost all migration. But, on its 20th anniversary, it has almost entirely vanished, except for a few remaining sections and a recognisable path marked by information stands.

The wall was a scheme to bar capitalism and trap people on either side. It proved to be an immense nuisance; separating families and friends. The eradication of the wall was indeed an achievement. When people grasp the concept of respecting culture, religion and race, and eliminate all prejudices, solutions will arise and pave the path to a peaceful planet.

The German Democratic Republic [GDR)] tried to control people and their freedom by imposing what they thought was right. Destroying the wall was in the best interest of citizens, because many families were separated and they would do anything to get to the other side — even risk their lives.

The Berlin Wall's obvious purpose was to divide. If it had remained, there would have been no European Union and Germany would not have an important role in the global arena. However, in 20 years, peace has not been achieved. People are not working towards it and have other issues on their mind. We need idealists in power to achieve the peace the world talks about.

The construction of the wall was a bad decision and to destroy it was the right move. The world has become a small village as a result of innovation and technology. Struggle and hard work pays off and if strong methodologies are followed, I think peace and harmony can be achieved.
