Brisbane: An Indian-born, American surgeon charged with manslaughter in connection with the deaths of three patients in Australia was freed on bail on Tuesday.
Dr. Jayant Patel posted a bond of 20,000 Australian dollars (US$19,500) and was released from police custody. He appeared briefly with his lawyer before the media in the northeastern city of Brisbane, where he looked tired and made no comment.
Patel, 58, faces 13 charges, including manslaughter, causing grievous bodily harm and fraud.
Patel did not enter a plea when he appeared in court on Monday, though his lawyer Arun Raniga said on Tuesday he would be preparing a defence.
"He will be staying at an undisclosed residential location and will now start preparing his defence, once he has recovered from his sleep and gets a bit of rest," Raniga told reporters, with Patel at his side.
