His Highness Shaikh Mohammad Bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, commented by saying: "We have succeeded because we always considered that tomorrow is a new day, and what was achieved yesterday had been achieved, and the history that we are writing is based on our future accomplishments and not what was already accomplished in the past."
His Highness stressed that the one who does not seek to be in the first row and who relies on his luck, will be left behind. His Highness's words became a visible reality. On the 9th of September 2009, the emirate of Dubai will be on a date with a historical event, which will put its name into historic records, following a string of unprecedented achievements accomplished under the wise leadership of Shaikh Mohammad. The world will witness the fulfilment of one of the most important milestones in the history of the UAE, the launch of the Dubai Metro, which will make Dubai a world-class destination.
The Dubai Metro Project, which was constructed in four years' record time, was always under the patronage and concern of Shaikh Mohammad and the continuous follow-up of Shaikh Hamdan Bin Mohammad Bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Crown Prince of Dubai and Chairman of the Executive Council, and his brother Shaikh Maktoum Bin Mohammad Bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Deputy Ruler of Dubai, who were the first to see the launch of several construction works in various stages of the Dubai Metro project. Shaikh Mohammad witnessed unforgettable moments during the process of constructing the Dubai Metro, where he laid on March 21, 2006 the foundation stone, signalling the start of construction on this project.
Moreover, he inaugurated the basic excavation work of the Dubai Metro project, and pressed the starting button of the giant tunnel boring machine known as the "TBM". The patronage of Shaikh Mohammad continued throughout various stages of the project, and on September 20, 2008 he launched the trial technical operation of the Dubai Metro, which ran from Jebel Ali Station to Ibn Battuta Station, covering a distance of 11 kilometres. It is the vision of Shaikh Mohammad who aims to develop an integrated transportation system, including the metro, buses and taxis, and other means of maritime transport, to serve residents and visitors and tourists, and to ensure a safe, quick and easy travel throughout all parts of this vibrant city.
