Dubai: Roads in Abu Dhabi will soon become safer as more cameras will soon be installed across the capital.

Abu Dhabi Police have announced that the third phase of catching errant motorists has been implemented, which means that drivers will see more speed cameras sprout up.

The cameras, according to police, will book motorists for crossing red signals and those who exceed the speed limit.

Lt. Col. Mohammad Al Shehi, director of Traffic Engineering and Road Safety, Directorate of Traffic and Patrols at Abu Dhabi Police, said the two previous phases had delivered positive results.

"From 2013 to 2016, incidents related to jumping red signals dropped by 64 percent and fatalities and serious injuries by 35 percent. Violations also went down by 66 percent over the past three years," he said.

The aim of the speed cameras is to reduce fatalities and serious injuries on the emirate's roads.

The third phase will cover interchanges in Abu Dhabi, Al Ain and Dhafra region, although specific details have not been revealed yet.
