Abu Dhabi: There have been eight fatalities caused by tailgating in Abu Dhabi till date this year, the Abu Dhabi Police said in a statement released on Wednesday.
Police said that a total of 73 accidents were reported this year caused by tailgating.
The police urged drivers to avoid driving so close to cars in front of them and always keep safe distance between vehicles.
Colonel Ahmad Al Zeyoudi, Director of the Main Roads Department at the Traffic and Patrols Department at Abu Dhabi Police General Command, said that tailgating was a dangerous driving habit, and often resulted into fatal accidents especially on highways.
Al Zeyoudi also added that drivers who harass drivers in front of them by beeping their horns and flashing their headlights were also dangerous and increased the risk of accidents.
Al Zeyoudi said that the Abu Dhabi Police were intensifying their efforts to curb tailgating violators.
He warned that offenders would receive a Dh400 fine and four black points on their driving licence.
