Dubai: Dubai Police are using drones for live broadcast of traffic jams during peak hours in order to dispatch patrols to ease congestions, an official said on Tuesday.

The drones will be linked to the police operations room to monitor traffic and events.

Brigadier Dr Khalid Al Merri, Deputy Director of Operational Communication of Dubai Police, said the drones use 4G technology and are controlled by officers in the command room.

“The new technology will help to record events, emergencies, disasters and accidents in Dubai and will broadcast live to the command room so that officers can take quick decisions. It will also archive the recordings and use them for training purposes,” Maj Gen Al Merri said.

The 4G technology is faster in transferring data and the drone can cover large parts of the city. The drones are equipped with long-life batteries.

Dubai Police have used live-broadcast technology in their patrols since 2008 and later added it for motorbike patrols in 2012 using 3G technology.

“The drones will secure the city as it can cover large areas,” he said.
