Abu Dhabi: A three-year-old Arab girl fell to her death from the 12th-floor window of her family’s apartment in downtown Abu Dhabi, police said.

The accident happened at the residential building in Khalidiya area, said police, due to a lack of adult supervision.

Police said furniture was positioned near the open window and is believed to have contributed to the child’s fall.

Police said they responded to the scene after receiving a call at 1.36pm on Monday.

Colonel Hamad Al Niyadi, deputy director of Central Police Directorate in the criminal security sector of Abu Dhabi Police, stressed the importance of not leaving children alone at home without supervision.

“One of the reasons that lead to the fall of children from windows is that residents leave pieces of furniture near windows or around them, which poses a threat to children,” Al Niyadi said.

He said Abu Dhabi Police have been educating the community about the safety of children and have urged residents not to leave children alone in houses.
