Folk dance troupe to perform in UAE

Dubai: The Mexican community in the UAE got together to celebrate their National Day on Thursday.

They remembered the beginning of the independence movement against Spanish rule 201 years ago on September 16, 1810.

Francisco Alonso Escobar, Consul-General of Mexico in Dubai, said that every year, on the night of September 15 a big public ceremony was held by the Mexican President, to remember the heroes who offered their lives for freedom and independence of the people and the country.

"This event is replicated in many cities and towns within Mexico and in all embassies and consulates around the world," Escobar told Gulf News.

In Dubai, the event saw hundreds of Mexicans and diplomats gathering. There was a ‘Fiesta' with a Mexican buffet dinner, music and dance.

Escobar said there were around 1,200 Mexicans living in the UAE, most of them in Dubai, Abu Dhabi and Sharjah.

There are more than 150 pilots working for the national airlines, there are vets, graphic designers, hoteliers and others in the industrial and commercial sector.

Art expositions

The Mexican Consulate in Dubai opened in 2009 and has been organises among other events, Mexican art expositions as well as gastronomic festivals given the taste people in the UAE has for Mexican food.

This year a folkloric dance troupe will come to perform across the seven emirates as part of the celebrations of the UAE National Day in December.

In order to promote Mexican heritage among children, a team of Mexican women are giving workshops and teaching Mexican history, culture, music and traditions.

"Here are children born outside Mexico, and with this initiative we are enforcing the values that define us," Escobar observed.

The relations between the UAE and Mexico has been good, both Governments are negotiating various agreements to promote investments and trading.

He also highlighted that tourism between the two countries is also growing.
