Dubai: The Dubai Municipality Clinic will continue medical tests for occupational health cards for a certain category of workers but will stop tests for residency visas from next week.

The clinic in Deira was swamped by thousands of workers after the Municipality announced that it would discontinue all medical services from next week after the Dubai Health Authority (DHA) said it will now offer these services.

Authorities had earlier made a decision not to allow municipal clinics or private clinics to offer these medical tests for residents.

The Dubai Municipality Clinic yesterday put up a notice that it will continue to offer health fitness medical tests for beauticians, nursery school staff, teachers, fitness centre, spa, restaurant and food industry workers.

Other residents who have to undergo medical tests for their residency visas will now have to go the nearest DHA centre in Muhaisna.

Medical staff at the Dubai Municipality Clinic said yesterday the number of people wanting tests has dropped dramatically and that they fear for their jobs. On an average, about 3,000 residents came to this clinic every day and has since dropped to few hundred.

Salah Abdul Rahman Amiri, assistant Director-General of public health services at Dubai Municipality, said there could be some "difficulties" initially but that this has been done so as not to duplicate the services with the DHA.

Senior DHA officials said their 14 centres can easily handle the overflow from the Municipal clinic. Maisa Al Bustani, Director of Medical Fitness Services said the clinics are capable of handling 4,000 applications every day.

She said five medical fitness centres have been allocated for house maids at Mankhool, Khawaneej, Al Bad'a, Al Laiseli and Al Twar.
