Geneva: The UAE reaffirmed before the United Nations’ Human Rights Council its commitment to aid Syrian refugees.

Obaid Salem Al Za’abi, UAE’s Permanent Representative to the UN and other international organisations, made the remarks during the 35th session of the UN Human Rights Council, during which an interactive dialogue was being held with the International Commission of Inquiry on Syria.

He emphasised that the only way to put an end to the Syrian conflict is through a political solution as per the Geneva-1 initiative.

Al Za’abi reaffirmed that the international community must steadfastly hold on to international standards as a key term for ending the continued suffering of the Syrian people. He clarified that reports issued by trusted sources, among them the International Commission of Inquiry on Syria, confirm that human rights violations still occur in Syria, as well as the use of violence and excessive force that is exacerbating the number of casualties, incarcerations and displaced people.

Al Za’abi called on the international community to urgently and quickly intensify efforts in order to achieve progress in current talks, and to begin carrying out constructive political dialogue that is in line with the Geneva-1 initiative and in a way that meets the legitimate aspirations of the Syrian people.
