Sharjah: His Highness Dr Shaikh Sultan Bin Mohammad Al Qasimi, Supreme Council Member and Ruler of Sharjah, on Tuesday hosted a dinner banquet in honour of a number of writers and publishers in Frankfurt, in the presence of Shaikha Bodour Bint Sultan Al Qasimi, chairperson of the Sharjah Investment and Development Authority (Shurooq) and president of the Emirates Publishers Association (EPA).

Dr Shaikh Sultan exchanged cordial talks with some intellectuals and publishers about cultural and literary issues. The Sharjah Ruler also received a number of gifts and publications from the writers present at the function.

Jan Zalasiewicz, Professor of Palaeobiology at the University of Leicester, researcher of fossil ecosystems and the environment, and author of the book ‘The Earth After Us’, gave a speech about various topics and geological contents he referred to in his book.

Dr Shaikh Sultan praised the geological, environmental and historical issues raised by the speakers, highlighting that Sharjah takes great interest in the environment and its components with unwavering keenness to preserve them.

He said that in order to sustain communication and dialogue with the other cultures and strengthen cooperation with international institutions and exhibitions, “I am keen to translate my books into [the] German language and provide them, to emphasise on the importance of familiarising the world with Arab cultural and historical productions.”

After the dinner, Dr Shaikh Sultan signed some copies of his many books, which he then gave to those in attendance.

The banquet was attended by Ali Abdullah Al Ahmad, UAE Ambassador to Germany; Brigadier-General Saif Al Zari Al Shamsi, Commander-in-Chief of Sharjah Police; Ahmad Bin Rakad Al Ameri, Chairman of the Sharjah Book Authority; Abdul Aziz Taryam, CEO Adviser and General Manager of Etisalat Northern Emirates; Mohammad Hassan Khalaf, director-general of the Sharjah Media Foundation; as well as a number of dignitaries, editors of UAE newspapers and a number of writers and publishers.
