The Department of Economic Development (DED) has launched its ‘Ramadan Awareness Tent’ campaign in more than 15 key areas of Dubai to educate consumers about their rights. The campaign is being introduced to the public at prominent shopping malls, supermarkets and major retail outlets.

“The Awareness Tent is set up during the Holy Month of Ramadan as the period normally witnesses hectic buying and selling. The Commercial Compliance and Consumer Protection division (CCCP) division is keen to reach out to as many consumers as possible and educate them of their rights and responsibilities as it would improve transparency and relations between merchants and customers,” said Omar Bu Shahab, CEO of DED’s CCCP division.

Leaflets on consumer rights will be distributed at the tents to increase awareness on how to file complaints, avail of refunds or request for product exchanges.

Moreover, to further enhance consumer protection services in the emirate, DED has announced its plan to launch a ‘Mobile Vehicle’ campaign during the last quarter of 2012. Vehicles painted in yellow — CCCP’s signature colour — will sport the CCCP’s slogan ‘Be Right Know Your Consumer Rights’ as they seek to rev up awareness on the go.

The vehicles will move around key areas in the emirate to educate and counsel consumers, receive their complaints, and list irregularities for the benefit of auditors of licensees. Businesses may have their licences renewed, cancelled, or they may apply for a new licence in the Mobile Vehicle.

“The Mobile Vehicle campaign falls under the directives of His Highness Shaikh Mohammad Bin Rashid Al Maktoum, UAE Vice-President and Prime Minister and Ruler of Dubai, to reach out to investors to highlight the diversity, attractiveness and investor-friendliness of the economic environment in the emirate of Dubai,” Mohammad Shael Al Sa’adi, CEO of the Business Registration and Licensing division at DED, said.

“The vehicle will provide a suite of services to investors and business owners. DED will also examine how government agencies can strengthen co-operation to enable investors to finalise all transactions real-time across e-Service platforms. DED is continuously working to raise performance levels and integrate the best practices in customer service,” Al Sa’adi added.

DED will announce the weekly schedule of the Mobile Vehicle campaign through the media and social networking sites soon.
