Sharjah: A 30-year-old woman has been taken to hospital after apparently setting herself on fire in a bid to commit suicide, an official at Sharjah Police told Gulf News.
The incident happened early Friday at the woman’s house in Maysaloon area at about 3am.
The woman, who was identified as N.S.J. from Comoros Island, is believed to have suffered first degree burns and was taken to Al Kuwaiti Hospital by her family and then transferred to Al Qasimi Hospital as her condition was reported to be critical.
She has been placed under police guard.
Police said that the woman got into heated argument with her family and then poured petrol on herself. She threatened to kill herself if they continued to fight with her.
The family members reportedly challenged the woman. Then she set herself on fire, according to police.
No one else was injured in the incident, police said.
The police office at the hospital reported the incident to the police operation room and a team from Wasit police station visited the woman and lodged a complaint over the incident.
Meanwhile, police summoned the family members of the woman for questioning. A police investigation is ongoing.
