Sharjah: The body of an Afghan worker was found hanging from a ceiling fan in his accommodation in Industrial Area No 8 on Friday afternoon, an official at Sharjah Police told Gulf News.

The 21-year-old worker, identified as S.M., is believed to have committed suicide using a plastic rope, the official said.

His Asian roommates told police they tried to lift the man’s body when they saw it at around 4pm in an attempt to save his life. But their attempt was in vain as he was already dead.

Police and forensic teams went to the scene after receiving information about the incident. They removed the victim’s body and transferred it to Kuwaiti Hospital at around 4.40pm and then to the forensic laboratory for an autopsy.

He added that officials took fingerprints and other details from the scene to investigate the matter but so far do not suspect anyone else was involved in the incident.

The worker was reported to have been suffering from depression which might have prompted him to end his life.

Police have transferred the case to the Public Prosecution.

The official warned the public, especially workers, to stop thinking about ending their lives, stressing that it is a criminal act in addition to being against the teachings of Islam. He urged people to be patient and to seek advice from religious scholars whenever they have problems.
