Dubai: A public relations officer has been accused of cursing a female manager on WhatsApp and threatening to kill her and her family if she refused to marry him.
The 40-year-old Indian officer, S.K., was said to have started stalking his countrywoman in India and then in Dubai where he sent her offensive messages on WhatsApp and assaulted her in an attempt to coerce her to marry him in December.
Prosecutors accused S.K. of threatening to kill the 25-year-old human resources manager and her family by chopping them into pieces. He was also charged with assaulting and cursing her.
The defendant failed to show up before the Dubai Court of First Instance and enter a plea.
According to the charge sheet, prosecutors said S.K. threatened the woman and her family, cursed her and assaulted her by trying to choke her.
The human resources manager claimed to prosecutors that the suspect first proposed to her while she was still in India but she rejected him.
“He came after me to Dubai more than one year ago … since then he has been stalking me. He insisted that we get married but I constantly refused. One day he came to my residence and asked me to meet him in front of the building. When I went down to check what he wanted, he threatened me verbally, saying ‘I will break your head and your mother’s head and that of your brother’s. He threatened me because he insisted on marrying me … then I complained to the police,” she testified.
The woman manager provided prosecutors with a written confession that S.K. had signed earlier before the police in which he confessed that he had stalked her.
The defendant was quoted as saying in the confession that he had been threatening and stalking the complainant since he came to Dubai and coercing her to marry him.
“I chased her to work daily and forced her to speak to me and used to embarrass her … I also used to stay up late in front of her house watching her,” read the confession.
Since he failed to show up in court, the suspect will be sentenced in absentia next month.
