Manama: The US sees no harm in guaranteeing a safe exit for Syrian President Basher Al Assad to end violence and avoid a civil war, the US ambassador to Algeria has said.
In an interview with local Arabic daily El Khabar published on Wednesday, Henry S. Ensher said that talk about guaranteeing a safe exit for Al Assad is a distinct possibility that is in line with the US priority to protect civilians.
The US sees no harm in granting him immunity as part of an agreement to avoid civil war, he reportedly said.
The diplomat, who arrived in the Algerian capital in July, referred to the deal brokered under US auspices with Yemeni President Ali Abdullah Saleh as an example that could be emulated.
Last month, the Arab League called for Al Assad to hand power to his top deputy to pave the way for the formation of a unity government that will prepare for early elections.
However, the Syrian government rejected the demands as attacks on its sovereignty, and blamed the months of unrest on "foreign conspiracies."
In the interview, Ensher said that the US positions on the events unfolding in Arab countries depended on the interests of Washington.
The Americans have elected officials to protect the US interests and their choice must be respected, he told the Algerian daily.
