Beirut: Nearly 60 people were killed on Monday in violence across Syria, the majority of them civilians from government shelling and gunfire in the central city of Hama, a monitoring group said on Tuesday.

"Thirty one civilians were killed by gunfire from government forces in the neighbourhood of Arbaeen in the the city of Hama," the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said.

It said 16 others died in the northwest province of Idlib. Thirteen of them, including women and children, were killed by a mine blast in the village of Jarjanaz, the Britain-based watchdog said.

The other casualties, among them five soldiers, died in unrest elsewhere.

The violence was taking place despite a ceasefire that went into effect April 12 and the presence of UN monitors.
