Mogadishu: Somalia's hardline Shebab militia and fighters from another religious group clashed on Monday, leaving at least five people dead and eight others injured, witnesses said.
Fighting resumed in Guriel town in central Somalia where the Ahlu Sunna Wal Jama'ah group overpowered the Shebab who controlled the town.
A resident said both groups used heavy machine guns and mortars. They expect the death toll to rise.
The unrest came as President Abdullahi Yusuf Ahmed resigned after four years in office.
