Reaching out: Red Cross sends aid
The International Committee of the Red Cross sent yesterday an aid convoy - the first of several expected this week - from the Jordanian capital to the Palestinian territories following fighting in the Hamas-controlled Gaza Strip.
The International Committee of the Red Cross sent yesterday an aid convoy - the first of several expected this week - from the Jordanian capital to the Palestinian territories following fighting in the Hamas-controlled Gaza Strip.
"The first truckload of 5,500 food parcels has been sent to our warehouse in [occupied] Jerusalem where it will be offloaded," Red Cross spokeswoman Bana Sayeh said.
"Others are expected to follow throughout the week."
Trip delayed in protest
Egypt's powerful head of intelligence Omar Sulaiman has put off a trip to Israel because of the Jewish state's onslaught on the Gaza Strip, state media reported yesterday.
The Al Ahram daily said Sulaiman postponed the trip, which had been due to take place tomorrow, in protest at "the Israeli escalation" in the Gaza Strip.
It said another date would be set for the visit, which is aimed at discussing ways of lifting the crippling blockade of the Gaza Strip, "depending on Israel's commitment to international resolutions".
Meanwhile, several hundred school children took part in a Hezbollah-organised demonstration outside UN headquarters in the Lebanese capital yesterday to protest against Israel's deadly offensive in Gaza.
Twenty schools participated in the rally, organisers said. The children presented a letter to a UN representative calling on the world body to take action.
Also yesterday, thousands of people attended a government-sponsored rally in the centre of the Syrian capital to condemn Israeli crimes.
