Ramallah: The Palestinian leadership and factions have agreed to ask and press for a vote on its demand for full statehood at the UN Security Council, said a top Palestinian official.

Speaking to Gulf News, Bassam Al Salhi, the Secretary General of the People's Party and member of the Executive Committee of the Palestinian Liberation Organization (PLO) said that the Palestinian leadership and factions will demand a vote on the Palestinian application for UN full member state.

"Even if the vote fails at the UN Security Council, we will submit a fresh request demanding a UN full member state," he said.

Al Salhi said that going ahead with the UN request was a suggestion by Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas after Palestinian factions discussed the possibility.

"The Palestinian factions have unanimously agreed," he said.

Palestinians have not been able to secure the nine necessary votes so far.

"We strictly reject the US pressure as the Palestinian UN application is an irreversible move," he added. "We will never cave in to threats and pressure, but will continue with our diplomatic efforts," he said.
