Israel may have 'violated' deal
Israel may have violated an agreement with the United States by using US-manufactured rockets armed with cluster bombs in Lebanon.
Washington: Israel may have violated an agreement with the United States by using US-manufactured rockets armed with cluster bombs in Lebanon.
The New York Times reported on Thursday that the State Department's Office of Defense Trade Controls opened an investigation into the possible breach this week after reports that three types of American cluster bombs were discovered in southern Lebanon and were responsible for civilian deaths.
The newspaper said that according to agreements made with the US in the 1970's, Israel would only be able to use the weapons against organised Arab armies and clearly defined military targets.
A spokesman for the Israeli Embassy told the Times, "We have not been informed of any such inquiry, and when we are we would be happy to respond."
