New York: UN Secretary General Ban Ki-Moon has criticised Israel for its “excessive use of force'' in its attacks in the Gaza Strip.
He also condemned rocket attacks from Palestinians and called on both sides to stop the violence which has resulted in more than 50 Palestinians, including eight children, being killed in the past few days.
Ban's comments came at the start of an emergency UN Security Council meeting to discuss the situation.
He added: "While recognising Israel's right to defend itself, I condemn the disproportionate and excessive use of force that has killed and injured so many civilians, including children.
"I call on Israel to cease such attacks. I condemn Palestinian rocket attacks and call for the immediate cessation of such acts of terrorism."
