Major broadcasters unite in an appeal for missing BBC journalist Alan Johnston
London: Some of the world's major news television broadcasters will simultaneously participate in a day of action for abducted BBC journalist Alan Johnston.
For the first time, the BBC, Sky News, CNN and Al Jazeera will all concurrently broadcast a series of programmes including a rally in Gaza City and a press conference held by BBC Director-General Mark Thompson, who will make a direct appeal for Johnston's release.
The journalist's family is also expected to address a news conference.
Richard Porter, head of news for BBC World, said: "We wanted to produce a programme which had impact in the Middle East and around the globe and we are extremely grateful for all the co-operation shown by our fellow broadcasters."
He added, "We don't think this has ever happened before - but all the broadcasters involved share a common aim to highlight Alan's case and to remind viewers of the dangers faced by their news teams more frequently than ever."
The Palestinian government has said it is "deeply sorry" that Johnston is still being held and Thompson has said President Mahmoud Abbas assured him that Johnston appeared to be "safe and well".
The BBC believes Johnston was abducted one month ago in Gaza, while other reports have claimed he was abducted at gunpoint.
The simultaneous television broadcasts will begin on BBC, Sky News, CNN and Al Jazeera at 17.30 UAE time.
