Washington: The US has said it would be willing to attend a meeting next month featuring representatives from both Iran and Syria.
The meeting is designed to look at ways to help stabilise Iraq, and signals a potential softening of American's position on Iran's role in helping to end the violence in Iraq.
US Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice said: "We hope that all governments seize this opportunity to improve their relations with Iraq and to work for peace and stability in the region."
She added that both US and Iraqi were in agreement that the problem "requires the positive support of Iraq's neighbours" before it can be solved.
The White House has previously resisted any attempts to involve Iran and Syria in attempts to stabilise the country, and has accused Iran of supplying insurgents with weapons.
The meeting, which could be followed by a second one in April, has been scheduled to include members of the UN Security Council as well as the Arab League.
