Washington: The US Congress will receive next week a much-awaited report on the state of the war in Iraq from the US commander on the ground.
US commander in Iraq General David Petraeus may also discuss the possibility of restarting troop withdrawals in Iraq.
During the hearings next Tuesday and Wednesday, lawmakers are expected to ask Petraeus to assess the success of the United States' troop surge strategy.
"The period of consolidation and evaluation will take place and we'll take recommendations based on conditions on the ground there," Admiral Mike Mullen said ahead of Petraeus' testimony.
There are currently 158,000 US troops in Iraq, with the addition of combat troops last year credited with lowering violence in the country.
