Geneva: The lawyer of the Iraqi journalist who threw shoes at US President George W. Bush said on Monday that his client is seeking political asylum in Switzerland.

Lawyer Mauro Poggia said Muntadar Al Zaidi's life is in danger in Iraq.

Poggia said Al Zaidi's family told him the journalist has been beaten and tortured in detention.

Al Zaidi is in an Iraqi jail awaiting trial on charges of assaulting a foreign leader for his December 14 outburst at a news conference in Baghdad.

Once he is freed from detention, the journalist would have to go to the Swiss embassy in Baghdad to file an asylum request.
