Baghdad: Iraqi authorities lifted an indefinite curfew imposed on Baghdad on Monday, after Shiite cleric Muqtada Al Sadr made an offer to end days of fighting in the country.

Shiite cleric Muqtada Al Sadr on Sunday ordered followers to cease fire and cooperate with security forces to end clashes in Baghdad and Basra that has left more than 200 people dead

He also demanded the release of his followers captured during the six-day clashes with security forces.

"We announce our disavowal from anyone who carries weapons and targets government institutions, charities and political party offices," Al Sadr said in a statement.

The Iraqi government welcomed the move, which comes amid tensions over clashes with the military and Al Sadr's Mehdi Army rebels who had taken over control of Basra.
