Baghdad: Tareq Al Hashemi played a key role in arranging the unusual meeting last Monday between Dawood Ugo, adviser to the Turkish prime minister, and Masoud Barzani, president of the Kurdistan region.
The move was apparently aimed at strengthening Barzani's position as negotiations between Baghdad and Arbil continue to witness many setbacks.
"Al Hashemi's efforts are aimed at strengthening Barzani's position in negotiations with Nouri Al Maliki [Prime Minister of Iraq] in the coming days, especially in the light of opposition shown by the Kurdish leader on the issue of withdrawing Kurdish troops from the Khanaqin area more than a month ago," Tahi Al Hassani, a former academic at the University of Al Mustansiriya in Baghdad told Gulf News.
However, Al Hashemi's efforts will not be seen kindly by Sunni Arabs in Kirkuk and Nineveh because of the influence that Barzani would have on disputes between the Kurds and Arabs, Turkmen and Christians on the other.
