Russia warns Iran over uranium enrichment
Russia has warned Iran that it may support new potential UN sanctions unless it stops enriching uranium within the next few days.
Moscow: Russia has warned Iran that it may support new potential UN sanctions unless it stops enriching uranium within the next few days.
In a clear hardening in Russia's position, UN envoy Vitaly Churkin said: "If Iran in the next few days does not stop the enrichment activities of its heavy water project, then yes, Russia ... has taken upon itself certain commitments ... to support the resolution that has been drafted in the past month.''
The ultimatum also comes after recent Russian criticism the Iranian decision to test launch a rocket.
Russia has long been seen as an ally to Iran over the nuclear issue, and is helping to build a nuclear power plant there.
It has also delievered nuclear fuel to the plant under a US$1 billion contract, a move which Moscow feels gives Iran no reason to enrich uranium.
