Iran sanctions will never work, analyst says
Economic curbs will hurt common Iranians
Muscat: A political analyst in Oman has opposed sanctions against Iran, saying that sanctions have not worked and will never work.
"With initial sanctions, Iran became more self reliant and developed its own industries, therefore sanctions are not an answer," senior Omani political analyst, Haider Abdul Redha Dawood, told Gulf News.
"Since 1979 the Iranians have lived under one or the other sanction but it has not worked," he pointed.
"What kind of sanctions they can put on Iran now?" asked Haider.
"Economic sanctions on Iran will hurt people more than the state and problems of common Iranians would multiply," he said.
He also reckons that not all countries are in favour of further sanctions against Iran. "Like Turkey and Brazil, there would be other countries willing to work with Iran on the nuclear issues."
He advocates negotiations as the only answer for a peaceful solution to the Iran's nuclear problem.
In Haider's opinion Iran has the right to pursue a nuclear programme for peaceful purposes.
One yardstick
He wants questions raised on Israel's nuclear programme too. "Let's apply one yardstick for the peace in the Middle East," said the founder board member of the Oman Journalist Association.
Haider said that since the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) has not clearly reported that Iran's nuclear programme has reached the proportion of atomic bomb, the country should be given enough chance to explain and pursue nuclear programme for peaceful purpose.
"Any country for that matter has a right to pursue nuclear energy programme for peaceful purpose."
